A Career in the Arts After Clark

Celebrate Clarkies in the arts! Hear from four alumni—a musician, photographer, talent agent and antiquities expert—each of whom have succeeded in turning some aspect of the arts into a "day job."

Paul Burke

Professor of Classics at Clark University

Paul Burke is professor of Classics, adjunct professor of History and is affiliated with the programs in Ancient Civilization, Comparative Literature, Holocaust Studies, and Race and Ethnic Relations. He has been at Clark since 1976.

Burke teaches a wide variety of courses on the Clark campus, including: Introduction to Classical Greek, Jews and Christians in the Ancient World, Classical Mythology, Roman Art and Architecture, and Religious Experience in the Ancient World. He has taught a course on Roman archaeology in Clark's Luxembourg May Term and has directed numerous study-abroad tours of Southern Italy and Sicily.

Burke received an A.B. and Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1965 and 1971, respectively.

G. Max Bernheimer '82

Vice President and Head of International Antiquities, Christie's Inc.

Max Bernheimer organizes auctions in the areas of Greek, Roman, Etruscan, Egyptian and Near Eastern art for the auction house Christie's. Founded in 1766 by James Christie, Christie's conducted the greatest auctions of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, and today is the world's leading fine arts business. Since Bernheimer joined the firm in 1992, Christie's has grown to become the international leader in ancient art at auction.

Bernheimer is highly knowledgeable in ancient gems and jewelry, having written his thesis titled "Greek Engraved Gems in the Collection of the Harvard University Art Museums." He is the author of several volumes documenting the collection of Dr. Elie Borowski including, "Ancient Gems from the Borowski Collection" (2007); "Glories of Ancient Greece" (2001), an exhibition catalogue for ancient Greek vases and jewelry from the collection; and "Reflections on Ancient Glass from the Borowski Collection" (2002). He was a contributor to the exhibition catalogue "Dragons, Monsters and Fabulous Beasts" (2004) at the Bible Lands Museum in Jerusalem.

Bernheimer holds an M.A. in classical civilizations from Harvard University, and studied at the Intercollegiate Center for the Classical Studies in Rome and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. He has participated in archeological excavations at Caesarea in Israel, sponsored jointly by the University of Maryland and Haifa University.

Tracy Kraus '82

Executive Director/Flutist, Worcester Chamber Music Society

"Supple and riveting…elegant and adroit playing…dazzling" (Worcester Telegram) is a phrase that eloquently describes the artistry of Tracy Kraus, "the girl with the golden flute." Kraus has performed solo and chamber music in the United States and Europe. In addition to being featured on several live concert/interview radio broadcasts on WICN in Worcester and WGBH in Boston, she has appeared at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in New York. An active chamber musician, Kraus has performed at the Tanglewood and Aspen Festivals. She was the founder/artistic director of the New England based Abbott Chamber Players, which has received several grants from the Massachusetts Council of the Arts and Humanities to promote chamber music in the Worcester public schools. Kraus has toured the United States as a soloist, featuring the music of American and Russian composers, and is a member of the Mendocino (California) Music Festival Orchestra and the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra.

Diana Levine '07

Photographer

Diana Levine is a New York City based photographer who shoots editorial, advertising, and celebrity-portraiture work. She has photographed Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys, Usher, Elvis Costello, Wyclef Jean, Hanson, New Kids on the Block, Ludacris, and Will.i.am, among many others. Her clients include Aol, Billboard, Converse, MTV, Rolling Stone, along with numerous record labels, ad agencies, brands, and magazines. Her work can be viewed online at www.dianalevine.com.

 

 

Larry Webman '92

Vice President, Music Division, Paradigm Talent and Literary Agency

Larry Webman is responsible for the touring careers of a diverse group of artists including Coldplay, Barenaked Ladies, David Gray, Dropkick Murphys, Santigold and Sara Bareilles. Paradigm's client roster also includes Aerosmith, Arctic Monkeys, Black Eyed Peas, Dave Matthews Band, The Decemberists, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, The Fray, fun., Further, MGMT, Jason Mraz, My Chemical Romance, The National, Phish, Ray LaMontagne and Sigur Ros.

While an undergraduate at Clark, Webman ran the Pub Entertainment Committee for three years, securing talent to perform on campus and making connections that would start his career in the music industry.
