Before joining the faculty of Clark University, she did post-doctoral research at Harvard's Kennedy School and taught at Tufts, Boston University, and MIT.

Both of her daughters, Cecelia (age 12) and Anna (age 10), were born in California while Jennie and her husband were in graduate school at Caltech in Pasadena.
