Food for Thought:
A Conversation with Mark Bittman ’71, L.H.D. ’17

Wednesday, May 26
6:00 P.M. EDT

Join Mark Bittman ’71, L.H.D. ’17, and Dr. Heather Silber Mohamed, Associate Professor of Political Science, for a conversation about his career as a food journalist, author, and columnist for the New York Times. Mr. Bittman will also share details about his new book Animal, Vegetable, Junk: A History of Food, from Sustainable to Suicidal, which is an expansive look at how history has been shaped by humanity’s appetite for food, farmland, and the money behind it all—and how a better future is within reach. Dr. Silber Mohamed explores many of these concepts in her popular course, The Politics of Food and Drink, which examines the social, cultural, economic, ethical, and political factors that influence food and nutrition policies, programs, and choices.

Mr. Bittman is a #1 New York Times bestselling author, food journalist, author and columnist for the New York Times. He served as lead food writer for the New York Times Sunday Magazine, becoming the country’s first food-focused op-ed columnist for a major news publication. He is the founder of The Bittman Project, has authored twenty books and starred in four television series, including Showtime’s Emmy-winning Years of Living Dangerously. He was a distinguished fellow at the University of California (Berkeley), a fellow at the Union of Concerned Scientists, and is a member of the faculty at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. He graduated from Clark in 1971 with a degree in psychology and received an L.H.D. in 2017. To learn more about his books, recipes, and videos visit his website.
