The Worcester Art Museum has been collecting American art from its founding in 1896. Its collection is recognized as exceptional for a museum of its size in the United States. The collection includes works by leading American artists such as John Singleton Copley, Gilbert Stuart, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Mary Cassatt, Jacob Lawrence, Faith Ringgold and Nam June Paik. A highlight of the collection is a 17th century portrait of Mrs. Elizabeth Freake and Baby Mary, considered by art historians as one of the earliest masterpieces in American art.
