The Many Rewards of Saving for College
with Patricia Roberts P’21 and Ben DiFilippi ’21, MBA’22

Thursday, May 11
6:00 p.m. EDT

Join Patricia Roberts P’21 and her son Ben DiFilippi ’21, MBA ’22 for a discussion of the many (and sometimes unanticipated) rewards of saving for college and avoiding student loan debt. Patricia has recently authored Route 529: A Parent’s Guide to Saving for College and Career Training with 529 Plans, a pandemic project to which Ben contributed in various ways.

Patricia will provide an overview of 529 plan basics – including their special federal and state tax treatment. She will also review the types of institutions where 529 plans can be used and the broad range of expenses they can cover and she will bust the most common myths about these plans. Ben will share his experience of growing up in a family that prioritized saving for his educational goals and what he learned from the process. He will also share his involvement with the book, including his writing of the foreword and input on cover design and promotion.

Over the past twenty years, Patricia has helped tens of thousands of families avoid millions of dollars in student loan debt through her leadership in the 529 college savings arena. She has held key legal and product management roles at Citigroup, Merrill Lynch and AllianceBernstein Investments. She is currently Chief Operating Officer at Gift of College, Inc., a firm that provides benefits solutions to employers who wish to support employees with paying down student loan debt and saving for college.

Ben is a senior at Clark University studying Media, Culture, and the Arts and Business Management and he is a fifth year MBA candidate as well. In addition to holding a leadership role with the university’s Pub Entertainment Committee, Ben has interned at Atlantic Records and has done freelance website design and social media consulting. When not in Worcester, he resides in Brooklyn Heights, NY.
